Book Talk Thursday: The Snow Tree by Caroline Repchuk

Share:

Hi everyone! I linked up with Andrea at Reading Toward the Stars for Book Talk Thursday! I’d love to share a book that is great for the holidays. The Snow Tree by: Caroline Repchuk is about a little bear in the woods that wants to decorate a tree for Christmas. With the help of his woodland animal friends, they each offer a special decoration. This book honors the spirit of giving in a simple way for children to understand and appreciate. It also has a beautiful tactile feel to it when you touch the pages, which is sure to draw young readers closer!
I turned this story into a reader’s theater script for my class some years ago. There were lots of small parts, so you could easily split the class in half, give each group a script, and have them perform it for one another. I also had the students make or bring in props. You’d need a small artificial pine tree, and food decorations for the tree, which could be made out of construction paper and hung as ornaments. As a nice nature extension, you could have your children make small pinecone bird feeders to remind them that birds need to find food all through the cold winter months, and we can be their helpers.
I hope you enjoy this precious little holiday book with your class or even give it as a gift this year! Happy Holidays!
P.S. If you’re wondering where my holiday cookie swap linky party is, please scroll down a bit further, and you’ll find it! (*You can link your recipe up until Dec. 15.)
