Y to I Rule Exit Tickets & Quick Assessment and Spelling Practice
$1.00
This brief assessment resource is perfect for Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy classrooms that want to keep a close eye on whether students really understand when to change y to i before adding a suffix, and when to keep the y.
Description
Give your students a quick and focused way to review the Y to I spelling rule with these low-prep, print-and-go exit tickets and practice sheet. This brief assessment resource is perfect for Orton-Gillingham and structured literacy classrooms that want to keep a close eye on whether students really understand when to change y to i before adding a suffix, and when to keep the y.
Use the practice sheet as a warm-up before the exit tickets or as additional review afterward. Then, check for understanding daily with the numbered exit tickets for 5 days of quick assessment.
Each exit ticket invites students to analyze spelling in context:
-
There are 3 tickets per page, each with different sentences.
-
Students circle the sentence with the correct spelling or you can have them circle the spelling error instead.
-
As time allows, ask students to explain why the y changes to i or stays y to deepen their understanding of this important spelling generalization.
The tickets are flexible and easy to use:
-
Print and staple all 3 tickets together as a booklet for the week, or
-
Cut them apart and hand out one exit ticket at the end of each lesson when you’re reviewing the Y rule.
To help you monitor growth, a progress tracking chart is included. There is space for 6 student names (perfect for small groups), and you can simply print additional copies as needed for larger groups or multiple intervention groups.
