Product Description
This is a Women's History Month, biography genre unit and lap book project is for you! I’ve taught biographies with my third graders for many years, and it has become one of my favorite genres. The resources I've created work well in an interactive notebook.

*What's included?
I chose to have a few of my activities highlight 12 famous women, but they are certainly open and ready to be used with ANY biography.

-Page 4 has a photo tutorial explaining how to assemble a lap book. I tried to be very clear!

-Use the “What Is A Biography?” mini-poster for building background. There is a QR code with a link to a site for researching famous women for Women's History Month. You’ll need access to a QR code reader app and a mobile device to use them. This is a free app to download.

-I chose to focus this unit on the following skills: story elements and vocabulary of the biography genre, the legacy a person leaves behind, analyzing biographical characters and their unique traits, compare and contrast, research and note-taking. The CCSS for grades 2-4 are at the bottom of this description for lesson planning purposes.

-I’ve included some of my favorite graphic organizers to use for the different skills in this unit.

-The thinkmarks can be used to reinforce looking for examples of character traits within the narrative of a biography during guided or independent reading.

-12 of the trading cards have a QR code, which when scanned, will go to a kid-safe website for research. (I've taken special care to choose sites that have limited pop-ups, and reasonable readability for this age group.) Please message me privately if you have a concern about the QR codes not working.

-Use the blank trading cards for additional famous people.

-You may wish to use the lap book as an ongoing unit organizer, or as a culminating project. There are many creative possibilities!

-The blank Heroines Acrostic flap book works well with helping students solidify their thinking about the genre. Have them write one thing they learned about these famous women for each letter in the word HEROINES. Use the other flap book to highlight the key points of one famous person’s life.

-Please be sure to provide proper background on what biography is. See pg. 6 for assistance.

-The “Create Your Own Biography Mini poster” on pg. 19 is another option for research if you decide not to make this a lap book project. Or you may use it as an additional activity.

-I’ve included a list of suggested children’s books on pg. 20. There are many other great books out there, but most of these work well for grades 2-4 as read alouds, independent reading or in a guided reading setting.
