Product Description
Peter’s Chair, by the award winning author Ezra Jack Keats, is a wonderful story for children adjusting to new siblings in the home. This book unit provides activities for before, during and after reading.
Please read the following teacher tips and suggestions included in this product to give you an idea of what is included. I also recommend downloading the preview.
-Before I start the story, I use the pre-reading discussion questions and the poem on page 4 and 5. Both are good language builders. The poem can be used for shared reading or fluency practice.
-Use the vocabulary anticipation guide on page 6 to find out your students’ prior knowledge of the story vocabulary. You can fill the words in on column A yourself, or have students do it. (This is a graphic organizer I use in most all of my book units.)
-Page 7 has a QR code for you to scan for a listening center. When you scan the code it takes you to a Safeshare version of the Youtube video, so you should not have a problem playing it in school. You can also show it on an interactive whiteboard.
-Vocabulary on page 8-11 include word cards for pocket charts, and questions to prompt discussion about the words. Using the vocabulary question cards will help increase application.
-The mini-booklet on page 12-13 is great for students to use and record their thinking during guided reading groups. It’s also a quick assessment tool.
-Pages 14-17 are various tools for retelling and summarizing, using story elements.
-Word work with consonant digraphs can be the phonics skill focus while you read the book or to use in a literacy station. I include materials for word sorting and playing Concentration.
-Use the flap-book on page 25 to write a “Then and Now” poem. The prompts for each line of the poem are on each flap. I have students interview a parent to help talk about what they were like as a baby. Then model an example such as, “I used to ride in a stroller.” “But now I can ride a two wheeler bike.” On the inside middle section of the flap book, have students glue in a baby picture and a current picture.
-Use pages 26-31 for a bulletin board activity or to create a whole class book. Remind students that Peter had things that were special to him.
