Mentor Monday: Commemorating Memorial Day

Welcome to Mentor Monday! Please note this post has an affiliate link.

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, I’d like to take a minute to thank all of our servicemen and women for protecting our country and for paying the ultimate sacrifice. Freedom doesn’t come free. Please pause, reflect and thank a veteran. It truly is an honor to be an American.

The Wall by Eve Bunting, is one of my favorite books to teach about Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day.

The Wall is a powerful book. Bunting chooses the main character, usually a child, to narrate her books. Having a child narrator is especially effective because young readers relate to the feelings of other children easily. They can connect to the text and see themselves in the shoes of that child.

Whenever I have used this book with my own students, I share the history behind the building of the Vietnam War Memorial and show real photographs. Reading Rainbow has a beautiful episode of this book that I showed my students as well. Seeing the actual size of the wall and sensing its solemnness is unforgettable.

Print out the following freebie for your listening centers. It’s a read aloud of The Wall linked to a Safeshare site. This freebie is a page from my book unit on The Wall.

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog today.  Do you have a special book you like to use for Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day? I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Enjoy the freebie, and I hope you have a great long weekend!
