Memorial Day Books

Hi everyone!  I’d like to take a minute to thank all of our servicemen and women for protecting our country and for paying the ultimate sacrifice. Freedom doesn’t come free. However you may celebrate this long weekend, please pause, reflect and thank a veteran. It truly is an honor to be an American.

Here is a Youtube video of one of my favorite books, The Wall by Eve Bunting, to read for Memorial Day.

And now…let’s talk about cupcakes! Over the years, I’ve worked with many reluctant/struggling writers. Trying to come up with strategies and activities to bring out the excitement or light a spark can be tricky. I came up with a writing activity that can address descriptive and persuasive writing and appeal to the senses.  My cupcake treats writing project asks students to create a store design, logo and an ad to entice customers into buying their latest cupcake creation. Each child chooses a cupcake design, and is given a blank store front and themed paper to write their ad, which will feature their brand new cupcake.

This is a mouth watering activity sure to breathe new life into writing in your classrooms. My students enjoyed cupcake treats writing because it had an authentic feel to it. This is the type of writing that businesses really do to attract customers. That gives a sense of purpose for the child with a bit of a “so what” attitude toward writing.  Teachers appreciate it for being Common Core aligned, and addressing both persuasive and descriptive writing in the same lesson. You may be interested in my post about persuasive writing from last week’s Mentor Monday link-up. I hope you’ll give cupcake treats writing a try after you download my freebie.
